A Story That Began Far From Vanilla

Circa 2005, a Colorado girl ventured to Uganda in search of a great story—a story she hoped would become an award-winning film.

She found something much more meaningful.

Along the way, she met a group of street-connected children who changed her life forever. What began as a journey to tell their story became a seven-year chapter of her own life. Instead of simply returning home, she stayed—living alongside them and helping build businesses that could support their education, their dreams and, ultimately, their futures.

From taxi cabs and farming to a community radio station, the journey was never really about finding a business.

It was about creating opportunity.

As those children grew into young adults, a new question emerged: What would their future look like when they grew up?

They needed meaningful work. They needed opportunity. They needed an economy that could sustain the community they had worked so hard to build.

And in 2014, the vision for The Sweetest Bean was born.

Vanilla With a Purpose

Today, The Sweetest Bean is proudly based in Colorado and sources its whole-bean Ugandan vanilla from the same community near Kampala where this story began.

But we don't want to simply buy vanilla.

We want to build something that lasts.

Our goal is to create a long-term relationship with our Ugandan partners—one that creates meaningful employment, supports families and gives more Ugandans the opportunity to build a sustainable future through their own work.

Too often, the people who grow and cure the world's most valuable agricultural products receive the smallest share of the value those products create. We believe there is a better way.

We believe that when you buy vanilla, you should know where it came from, who helped produce it and what your purchase makes possible.

The Sweetest Bean is co-owned by Laura & Shana, two friends who grew up just down the street from one another and have spent decades partnering on creative projects, businesses and causes close to their hearts.

From the film and music industries to charitable fundraising, they've always shared a desire to use their talents to make a difference—to fight injustice, create opportunity and, most importantly, love people well.

The Sweetest Bean is the latest chapter in that story.
